BRIEF HISTORY
SLS was set up in 1986 by Mr Lim Peng Khoon. The first shop was at 31
Cavan Road (Lavander St), with a humble floor area of 100 square metres
and a staff of six. The bolts and nuts were imported from Malaysia and
the annual sales was a mere $1 m. With good quality and service, the
company grew steadily.
In 1990s, the business volume outgrew the capacity of the current
location. A new location which was three times bigger (300 square
metres) was found at Eunos. This was when SLS started to import from
China. Throughout 1990s, our strategic relationship with China
deepened, and our Chinese network grew steadily. The annual sales have
now increased fivefold to $5 m. Even with the increased volumes, we
pursued lean production and maintained efficiency with a staff of only
eight. In 1994, we were convinced about the long term growth potential
of the company and a strategic decision was taken to build a warehouse
at 31 Sungei Kadut Road. Its 4,000 sq metres allows us to dramatically
expand our range and depth of inventory.
SLS
successfully achieved ISO 9001:2000 for quality management and service
in 2003, demonstrating our commitment to greater quality. In 2004, the
head office was shifted to a central and accessible location at 11
Jalan Mesin (Upper Paya Lebar), with increased floor area of 625 square
metres. It consists of the Director's Office, Accounting Department,
Sales Department, warehouse and factory.
SLS started to expand the range of products, including obtaining sole
dealerships in certain products and testing the Singapore market with
other China products used for industrial applications. These years
allowed SLS to better understand the Singapore market and expanded the
business network in China. In 2007, we also begin to build our
partnership with the marine and offshore industries, supplying to
Keppel FELS, Sembcorp, Jurong Shipyard. In 2008, SLS started to expand
overseas by re-exporting China products to the Indonesian and Thailand
markets. In the same year, we supplied our products to the upgrading of
Changi International Airport Terminal 1, which was our first government
project. This was the start to our subsequent participation in key
government and private projects, namely Marina Integrated Resort,
Sentosa Integrated Resort, MRT Downtown Line, MRT Circle Line, The
Pinnacle @ Duxton, etc. We are also supplying to the Marina Coastal
Expressway recently announced by the Singapore government.
In 2009, we strengthened our marketing strategy to reach out to more
customers locally and overseas. At the same time, we exploited IT to
increase efficiency by migrating to a better information and accounting
management system. Since we started 23 years ago, our total floor area
has grown from 100 square meter to 4,625 square metres. The Sungei
Kadut warehouse now holds an estimated 2000 tons of stocked items worth
millions of dollars. Our sales have also seen a tenfold increase.
With consistently good results, the Founder and Managing Director was
awarded the Successful Entrepreneur (Platinum Category) for 2010 by GRC
Press Holdings.
